Secret Santa in ChatGPT

· 2 min read

Add Humbugg to ChatGPT and run the whole exchange by typing. ChatGPT sets it up, keeps track of wish lists and asks your person questions for you. You press Draw, and each person sees only the name they drew.

What to type

Ask in your own words. If you are organizing:

  • Set up a family Secret Santa for Dec 24, $50 limit, and keep Mia and Theo from drawing each other.
  • Who still hasn’t made a wish list?
  • Start this year’s exchange from last year’s.

If you are taking part:

  • Who did I draw and what’s on their list?
  • Add wool socks size 10 to my wish list.
  • Ask my person, anonymously, what size they wear.
  • Mark the scarf as bought.
Humbugg’s page for the person you drew, as it opens in the chat: Omar Haddad, his wish list of a tea sampler, a desk plant and a desk lamp, and one wish marked as planned.
Ask who you drew, and their wish list opens in the chat.

How it works

  1. Add Humbugg to ChatGPT

Follow the setup steps and sign in with your Humbugg account. It takes about two minutes.

  2. Describe your exchange

Tell ChatGPT the date, the spending limit and who should not draw whom. It creates the exchange and gives you one link to share.

  3. Let people join

Everyone joins from the link in their browser and adds a wish list. Nobody else needs ChatGPT.

  4. Draw

Ask ChatGPT to draw names. It shows who is taking part and anything still missing, and you press Draw.

Humbugg’s draw review in the chat: eight people, one still without a wish list, Ravi Patel and Greta Lindqvist kept apart, and a Draw names button.
Nothing is drawn until you press Draw names.

Why not ask ChatGPT to pick the names?

ChatGPT can shuffle a list of names. Then it knows every pair, and so does anyone who reads the chat. Somebody still has to tell each person their match in private and keep the wish lists in one place.

With Humbugg the names are drawn on Humbugg. ChatGPT sees your own match, the same as you would on Humbugg, and each person finds out theirs when they sign in.

Asking your person a question

Type “Ask my person, anonymously, what size they wear.” ChatGPT shows you the message and sends it when you say so. Your person sees it from “Your Secret Santa” and replies in Humbugg.

Good to know

No. It sees what you would see on Humbugg: your own exchanges, your wish list and the person you drew. It cannot tell you who your Secret Santa is.

It gets the draw ready and shows you a Draw button. Nothing is drawn until you press it.

No. Each person picks. Some use ChatGPT or Claude, others use Humbugg in their browser, and it is the same exchange either way.

Adding Humbugg to ChatGPT yourself needs a paid ChatGPT plan. The people you invite can join from the link in their browser.

An exchange of up to 6 people, organizer included, is free, chat included. Bigger exchanges need Plus, which covers every exchange you organize for a year. Subscribe if you want it to renew automatically.
